About Grace Richard
My name is Grace Richard, and I am a science fiction and fantasy romance author whose stories are inspired by imagination, adventure, love, and the worlds we create when reality is not enough.
I was born in The Bronx, New York, in 1982, and growing up in the 1980s gave me a childhood filled with cartoons, movies, fantasy, and imagination. As the youngest of two children, I spent countless hours playing make-believe with my older brother in our backyard. Looking back, I realize that those childhood games were the beginning of my journey as a storyteller.
I grew up in a close-knit Italian household and was raised in a very sheltered environment. Because I did not always have many opportunities to explore the outside world, I created worlds of my own. I would talk and sing to myself and invent characters to keep me company. Without realizing it, I was learning the foundations of character creation.
Many of those early characters were inspired by the personalities of the cartoons I watched and the classic fairy tales I read. My imagination became a place where I could explore friendships, personalities, adventures, and possibilities that I was still learning to understand in the real world.
Growing up was not always easy. I struggled socially and often felt like an outsider. School brought difficult experiences with bullying, and there were times when I felt misunderstood and discouraged. Eventually, my family moved my brother and me to Upstate New York to stay with our grandparents. That change gave me the opportunity to step outside the sheltered environment I had known and begin discovering who I really was.
Then came Dungeons & Dragons.
A friend introduced me to the game, and it opened an entirely new world. For the first time, I found a community where imagination was not something strange—it was something everyone shared. I began making friends and discovered that there were people who understood the worlds I had always carried inside my head.
During high school, I developed even more interests that would later influence my writing. I took up fencing, attended Renaissance fairs, and became fascinated by fantasy and adventure. Xena: Warrior Princess became one of my favorite shows, and I admired its strength, courage, and sense of adventure.
I also developed a deep love for anime, including Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Slayers, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Whenever I imagined my own fictional worlds, I often pictured them through an anime-inspired lens. These stories and characters became another important source of inspiration and helped shape the way I envisioned storytelling.
In college, attending my first gaming convention became another turning point. I began writing short stories and plays, although I often struggled with self-doubt and writer’s block. Life’s responsibilities frequently made it difficult to find the time and motivation to write, but the desire to create never disappeared.
As I entered adulthood, I gradually learned to step outside the protective bubble I had grown up in. My husband played an important role in that journey, encouraging me to become more independent and confident. I began working, taking care of myself and others, and exploring new interests, including karate.
Then came 2020.
The pandemic brought an overwhelming sense of isolation and uncertainty. Between working long hours and watching the negativity and division unfolding around me, I found myself becoming withdrawn and frustrated once again.
One day at work, I remember thinking that I needed an escape from everything happening around me. I looked at a blank piece of paper sitting on my desk—and I started writing.
That moment reminded me of something I had known since childhood: when reality becomes overwhelming, my imagination gives me somewhere to go.
The worlds I once created as a child became the foundation for the stories I write today. My love of fantasy, science fiction, romance, anime, gaming, mythology, and adventure all come together in my work.
Today, I write for the dreamer who has ever felt like an outsider, for the person who has ever needed a world of their own, and for anyone who believes that imagination can take us somewhere extraordinary.
My stories are more than fiction. They are pieces of the worlds I have carried with me since childhood—and now, I get to share those worlds with you.
